Senator Lowenthal Dedicates The Arc’s New Name and Sign

The Arc Los Angeles & Orange Counties (formerly Arc of Southeast Los Angeles County) welcomed Senator Alan Lowenthal to The Arc’s campus in Downey.  The Senator met with The Arc participants and presided over the dedication of The Arc’s new name and sign.

It was a day of celebration at The Arc as Senator Lowenthal joined by Legislative Assistant Meegen Murray, District Rep. Irantzu Pujadas and Michael Hollon, District Rep. for Assemblymember Charles Calderon spent a morning touring  the many services that The Arc offers for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  The Arc participants also presented the Senator with a special award for fighting for their rights on State budget issues.  Senator Lowenthal commented, “I’m very proud to have worked with The Arc and very pleased to have played a small part on this project.  Lots of people think that government doesn’t work, but when we work together government does work”.

The morning culminated with The Arc President Ray Brown hosting a ceremony on Woodruff Avenue with 200 participants of The Arc to unveil the new monument sign displaying The Arc’s new name (The Arc Los Angeles & Orange Counties) and the new logo.  As President Ray Brown said, “It was a day to give thanks and share with all our participants what TheArc means as we move forward together.”

The Arc was founded in 1956 and serves over 400 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in 14 programs and services.  For more information about The Arc  or to tour their programs – call 562-803-4606 ext. 230.

CEO Commentary - By Kevin P. MacDonald

What a wonderful time of year - in fact its been several months of wonderful times here at The Arc.

We start getting ready for the Holidays in October because over 150 people have been out shopping - just them and an Instructor. They get to buy the presents they want for loved ones, pay for them with their own money and learn skills in the act of giving. Needless to say the wrapping of over 500 gifts has presented a challenge - but the staff jumped to make the Holidays extra special.

This week the parties continue with the Esther and Irwin Kookier Holiday Luncheon named in memory of Esther - one of our founding mothers and Irwin who worked at The Arc for 25 years. The luncheon will provide a full Christmas meal for over 300 participants at The Arc.

We conclude the Holidays with a New Year's Eve party on December 30th with a big countdown followed by a dance, champagne glasses of cider, streamers, balloons and fun.

It is a wonderful time of year to share the joy of the season with the people we serve. Thank you for your support and may the New Year be good to you.

Kevin
