People

Since 1956, The hallmark of The Arc has been the recognition that intellectual and other developmental disabilities do not define who an individual is or what an individual wants out of life.  To be sure, it may be helpful to know and understand the subject of intellectual and other developmental disabilities in order to understand what type of help and support the individual may need.  But to know an individual, you must get to know the individual and not simply their disability.

Following these values, the staff of The Arc have sought a culture of inclusion and support with consumers rather than one of superiority or authority.  We listen to and ask questions about the needs and desires of the people we serve before we offer support or guidance. We refrain from categorizing individuals by their medical diagnoses, but instead, we acknowledge each individual’s unique perspective in all of our interactions and dealings.

Our ultimate goal is to support the people we serve to reach their goals in work, education, equality, and respect.
